Harwich once encompassed and included the town of Brewster. The area was originally settled by Native Americans who named the area Satucket.Later settled in 1670 as the eastern parish of the Cape Cod town of Yarmouth. Officially incorporated in 1694 Harwich took its name from Harwich England. Agriculture & fishing were its first industries. Once larger ships too large to enter Harwich’s shallow ports began taking over the fishing industry the town residents began to shift to the Cranberry Industry and Tourism to support its economy. Harwich’s first resort opened in 1880. With miles of beautiful sandy beaches, fine restaurants, shopping and wonderful accommodations from water front vacation rental homes to B & B’s Harwich offers much to year round residents and visitors alike. The annual Harwich Cranberry Festival is considered one of the top shows in America. A celebration for the whole family, featuring a carnival with rides, bands, great food, music, arts and crafts and a fireworks extravaganza.
